In February 2026, Sophos acquired Arco Cyber, a UK security assurance company. In October 2026, that technology ships as Sophos CISO Advantage through the Sophos partner channel, with a “Plus” tier adding continuous monitoring and governance workflows in December. Sophos president Raja Patel called it “the biggest opportunity for our partner ecosystem.”
He’s right about the opportunity. I’d know — I built the largest vCISO firm in North America before starting RealCISO, and I’ve watched this market go from something you had to explain on every sales call to something a global security vendor now builds its entire channel strategy around.
So let’s be clear about what this announcement means: the category is validated. If you run an MSP or MSSP and you’ve been on the fence about whether security advisory is a real line of business, a vendor Omdia named a Champion of MSP ecosystems in 2026 just answered that for you.
The open question isn’t whether to build the practice. It’s whose practice you’re building.

The math behind the land grab
Sophos is citing the same numbers everyone in this market cites, and they’re accurate. Roughly 359 million organizations globally. Fewer than 35,000 CISOs. Sophos frames it as one in 10,000 organizations employing one.
They also cite three data points worth repeating to your clients regardless of which platform you pick:
- 38% of ransomware victims had a known security gap they hadn’t yet addressed
- 90% of breaches trace back to gaps in existing defenses, not novel attacks
- 40% of cyber insurance claims get denied over non-compliance with policy requirements
That third one is the reason security advisory sells. Your client bought the tools. They still can’t prove the tools work, and the proof is what the board, the regulator, the auditor, and the underwriter all want.
Sophos SVP Rob Harrison put the channel implication plainly: “Partners that will win are those that move beyond individual products and become trusted security advisors.” No argument here.
Where the two platforms actually differ
Here’s the honest comparison. I’m not going to pretend Sophos has nothing — Arco Cyber did real work on control validation, and Sophos has distribution that no independent platform can match.

Question 1: Can it assess a stack you don’t sell?
This is the question I’d lead with, and it’s not rhetorical — ask your Sophos channel rep directly and write the answer down.
Sophos CISO Advantage is described as integrating with Sophos Central and as part of Sophos Fusion. Sophos also says it’s delivered through partners to customers across maturity levels, which implies flexibility. Both things can be true. But you should know precisely what the assessment sees when the client runs CrowdStrike for endpoint, Okta for identity, Intune for device management, and Qualys for vulnerabilities — because most of your clients do.
A vendor’s assurance platform has one structural problem: the recommendation engine and the product catalog have the same parent. When the gap analysis says “you need better endpoint coverage,” your client is going to wonder whether that’s the assessment talking or the quota.
That’s not cynicism about Sophos specifically. It’s the same reason nobody lets their auditor sell them remediation.
RealCISO doesn’t sell security products. Our integrations run across AWS, Azure, GCP, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Okta, Intune, Jamf, CrowdStrike, Qualys, Tenable, Liongard, and more — sixteen as of the September release, collecting automated evidence on a twelve-hour cadence. We have no reason to prefer one vendor’s answer over another’s, because we don’t get paid on any of them.
Question 2: Which frameworks does the client actually need?
NIST CSF, CIS Controls, and NIS2 cover a lot of ground. They do not cover a defense contractor that needs CMMC Level 2 and an SPRS score. They do not cover a medical practice that needs HIPAA. They do not cover a firm under NYDFS Part 500 Amendment 2, or a company facing FTC Safeguards.
If your book of business is general SMB, the CSF-and-CIS combination is probably fine. If you have regulated clients — and most MSPs that have been at this a while do — check the framework list against your actual client roster before you commit, and check whether frameworks are priced individually. Framework-by-framework pricing is how a $500/client offering quietly becomes $1,500.
RealCISO includes every framework at no additional charge, and supports multiple frameworks in a single assessment project with one evidence set mapped across all of them. Assess HIPAA and NIST CSF 2.0 at the same time; collect the evidence once.
Question 3: Does it show progress, or just status?
Most assurance tooling — including, based on what’s been published, CISO Advantage — reports posture: here’s your score, here are your gaps, here’s how you compare to peers. That’s useful. It’s also what every platform in this category does.
The harder problem is showing a client that they got better. A board doesn’t want a score; it wants a trend line. An underwriter doesn’t want a snapshot; it wants evidence of a maturing program.
RealCISO tracks L1 through L5 maturity per control, aggregated to the project, across quarters. That’s the difference between “you’re at 62%” and “your access control practice moved from Developing to Defined over two quarters, and here’s the evidence behind it.” It’s also the mechanic that turns a one-time assessment into a recurring engagement, which is the entire point of building an advisory practice.

Show clients a trend line, not a score

See It on Your Data →Question 4: Whose client is it?
An MSP building a security advisory practice inside a single vendor’s ecosystem is building an asset that vests to that vendor. Your assessments, your client history, your maturity data, and your report templates live in that vendor’s console. If the relationship changes — pricing, program tiers, an acquisition, a strategy shift — your practice moves with it or doesn’t move at all.
I’m not going to tell you that risk is disqualifying. Plenty of profitable MSP businesses are built deep inside one stack. But you should price the risk consciously rather than discover it in year three.
Ask about data export. Ask what happens to historical assessments if you leave the program. Ask whether the reports carry your brand or Sophos’s. Those answers tell you who owns the practice.
Question 5: What does it do to your margin?
Sophos hasn’t published pricing. The partner materials point you to your channel account manager, which is normal this far ahead of launch, but it means you can’t model the offering yet. When you do get numbers, ask for three things specifically: the per-client cost at your actual client count, whether framework coverage is priced separately, and whether the price changes based on how much Sophos product that client runs. The third one matters most, because a platform priced off your attach rate isn’t a services business — it’s a product discount with extra steps.
RealCISO publishes its partner pricing. Client licenses run $500/year for Starter, $2,500 for Premium, and $4,000 for Complete, under a Consultant License. You set what you charge the client on top of that. Every framework is included at every tier — no surcharge for adding CMMC or HIPAA to a client that needs it.
That structure exists because an advisory practice only works if the unit economics hold at client number one and at client number two hundred. A platform cost that stays flat per client is a practice you can scale. A platform cost that moves with your vendor attach rate isn’t a practice — it’s a promotion.
The part where I’m not neutral
RealCISO was ranked the #1 vCISO platform by both G2 and SourceForge in their Summer 2026 reports, and just over 3,000 organizations run on it. We built it specifically for MSPs, MSSPs, and independent consultants who need to run compliance work across dozens or hundreds of client environments — multi-tenant from the start, white-label, with per-client licensing so you set your own margin.
But the reason I’d tell you to take the Sophos announcement seriously is that it’s the clearest signal yet that advisory services are where channel margin is going. Whichever platform you choose, choose one this quarter. The partners who start building the practice now will be two years ahead of the ones who wait for the October launch to make up their minds.

Frequently asked questions
What is Sophos CISO Advantage?
Sophos CISO Advantage is a cyber program management platform built on technology Sophos acquired from Arco Cyber, a UK security assurance company, in February 2026. It assesses security posture, maps controls to compliance frameworks, and produces board-level reporting. Version 1 launches in October 2026, with a Plus tier adding continuous monitoring and governance workflows in December 2026.
When is Sophos CISO Advantage available?
Sophos has said CISO Advantage v1 becomes available to MSP partners in October 2026, with CISO Advantage Plus following in December 2026.
What is Arco Cyber?
Arco Cyber is a UK-based cybersecurity assurance company acquired by Sophos in February 2026. Its platform continuously validated whether security controls were effective and mapped them to risk and compliance frameworks. The Arco team joined Sophos to build CISO Advantage, and the technology is being integrated into Sophos Central.
What is the best alternative to Sophos CISO Advantage for MSPs?
It depends on your client base. If your clients run a mixed security stack or fall under regulated frameworks like CMMC, HIPAA, or NYDFS Part 500, a vendor-neutral vCISO platform is generally the better fit. RealCISO was ranked the #1 vCISO platform by G2 and SourceForge in Summer 2026 and supports multi-tenant delivery, white-labeling, and all frameworks at no additional cost.
Does a vCISO platform require a specific security vendor’s products?
Vendor-owned platforms are typically built around that vendor’s telemetry and console. Independent platforms like RealCISO integrate across whatever the client runs — AWS, Azure, GCP, Microsoft 365, Okta, CrowdStrike, Qualys, Tenable, and others — without preferring any particular product.
